Taking Strides Against Stroke

Delaware Valley Stroke Council is celebrating our 14th Anniversary year and will be holding our annual Dr. Howard Mazer Memorial Strides For Stroke 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, June 14, 2009 from 7:30‑11:00 a.m. along the scenic Philadelphia Art Museum and West River Drive. This year we are increasing the size of the event and are expecting over 1,500 runners and walkers to participate. We will mail and distribe to the community over 30,000 brochures in anticipation of ever‑increasing participation.

With the continual growth of Delaware Valley Stroke Council, we are able to continuously advance education in the Delaware Valley and help reduce the incidence and impact of stroke through heightened public awareness, community education, and legislative and patient advocacy.

Fast Facts About Stroke
When a stroke occurs, circulation in the brain is cut off. Most strokes occur when arteries to the brain are blocked by blood clots or by a build‑up of plaque and other fatty deposits. These blockages prevent blood from reaching brain cells. Starved of blood and oxygen, these brain cells die, robbing people of their abilities to speak, to walk, and even to breathe.

More than 750,000 Americans suffer a stroke every year in the United States. It is the number three killer and the number one cause of adult disability. Sadly, more women die of stroke each year than they do from Breast Cancer and AIDS.
