Fast Facts About Stroke
When a stroke occurs, circulation in the brain is cut off. Most strokes
occur when arteries to the brain are blocked by blood clots or by a build‑up
of plaque and other fatty deposits. These blockages prevent blood from
reaching brain cells. Starved of blood and oxygen, these brain cells die,
robbing people of their abilities to speak, to walk, and even to breathe.
More than 750,000 Americans suffer a stroke every year in the United
States. It is the number three killer and the number one cause of adult
disability. Sadly, more women die of stroke each year than they do from
Breast Cancer and AIDS.
